여기, 오랜 시간이 헛되지 않게 그 때의 이야기들을 간직하면서 새로운 모습으로 여행자 들을 기다리는 공간들이 있다. 2016 수원화성방문의 해를 맞아 화성행궁 주변에 하나 둘 자리를 잡아가고 있는 게스트하우스들의 이야기이다. 필자가 글을 쓰고 있는 동안에도 새롭게 문을 여는 공간들도 있을 것이다. 모든 공간들의 이야기를 담을 수 없어 아쉽지만, 그 중 세 곳을 소개하고자 한다.

삶을 여행하는 공간 [공존공간 89 - 2]

삶을 여행하는 모든 이들을 위해…….
활짝 열려있는 대문 옆에는 여행자들을 맞이하는 주인장의 마음이 담긴 글귀가 쓰여 있다.
‘공존공간 89 - 2’는 주인장의 할아버지, 할머니 댁이었다. 다른 곳으로 떠나면서 임대를 주었던 공간에 대한 정은 점점 멀어져갔고, 급기야 가족 내에선 판매까지 이야기 되었다.
그렇게 없어질 뻔한 공간이 지금은 많은 이들이 거쳐 가는 게스트하우스가 될 것을 누가 알았겠는가.
‘공존공간 89 - 2’는 많은 이야기들을 가지고 있다. 할아버지 할머니와 함께 살았던 주인장의 어린 시절 추억들과 ‘행궁동점거예술축제’, ‘어쩌다마켓’ 등 다양한 문화예술활동이 펼쳐졌던 시간들, 그리고 카페와 게스트하우스가 된 지금의 공존공간까지 다양한 기억들을 가지고 또, 새로운 이야기들을 만들어내고 있다.

따뜻한 햇살이 함께하는 공존공간 앞 골목은 탁 트인 문틈 사이로 흘러나오는 향긋한 커피내음으로 가득 찬다. 골목 어귀에서 뛰어노는 아이들, 잠시 산책 나오신 동네 어르신들과 함께 이곳을 찾은 여행객들은 어린 시절로 돌아간다.
커피내음을 따라 공존공간에 들어가면 반갑게 맞이해주는 마스코트 아르가 있다. 카페로 구성된 1층에는 각기 다른 느낌을 주는 다양한 테이블과 의자가 있다. 공간을 채운 서로 다른 개성의 이러한 소품들은 다양한 여행자들의 취향을 존중해주는 듯하다. 커피에는 수제 티라미수, 맥주에는 수제피자, 와인에는 파스타와 샐러드 등 즐기는 방법이 다양하다.
그럼, 이제 2층 게스트하우스로 올라가보자. 공간은 거실과 4인실, 그리고 2인실 등으로 이루어져 있다. 그리 크지는 않지만, 거실에 앉아 창밖으로 보이는 수원화성의 북서포루를 배경삼아 책을 읽기도 하고, 다른 여행자들과 대화를 하면서 또 다른 인연을 만들어보기도 한다.
게스트를 방문한 여행자들은 카페를 방문한 손님들과 친구가 되기도 하고, 계절마다 바뀌는 다양한 수제메뉴와 이벤트들로 생각지 못했던 즐거움을 가져가기도 한다.
내가 아닌 타인의 기준에 맞추어 삶을 살다보면 나 자신을 잃게 될 때가 있다. 그 가운데 여행을 하다보면 자신에게 집중하며 세상과 호흡하고 있다는 느낌을 받게 된다. 공존공간은 자신의 삶을 찾아 여행하는 사람들과 함께 만들어가는 그런 공간이다. 그래서 이곳은 ‘공존공간 89 - 2’이다

게스트하우스 방방의 모습

근대공간으로의 여행 [방방]

작은 창문 네 개가 쪼르르 줄지어 있는 이층집. 이곳이 ‘방방’이다.
작아 보이는 이곳은 안에 들어가는 순간 우리를 근대시대로 초대한다. ㄷ자 형태에 이 공간은 만 50세를 넘긴 살아있는 근대유산이다.
한국전쟁을 치룬지 10년이 좀 넘은 1965년, 당시 유일한 수출품인 가발을 만들기 위한 공장이 방방의 처음 모습이다. 1970년대 말까지 이어지던 공장으로써의 방방은 가발산업이 사양길에 접어들면서 주인이 두 차례 바뀌었고, 세 번째 주인은 1981년 이 곳을 여관으로 변경하여 2006년까지 운영하였다. 그때의 모습이 지금의 방방을 만들었다. 이층의 긴 복도를 따라 들어선 방들은 칸칸이 나누어져 옛날 여인숙의 모습을 연상시킨다.

이후 셋방으로 쓰이기도 하고, 전시장 및 예술작가들의 작업공간으로 사용되기도 하였다. 그렇게 다양한 모습으로 많은 이들과 함께한 이 공간은 2015년 6월, 긴 세월을 이겨내고 게스트하우스와 카페로 새로운 변화를 시작하였다.
1층 카페에 들어서면 멋스러운 적갈색 의자에 가지각색의 이야기를 담고 있는 테이블이 눈에 들어온다. 테이블을 하나하나 들여다보고 있으니 입가에 미소가 절로난다. 그도 그럴 것이 이집 주인장이 공사현장에서 낡은 것을 몽땅 떼어다 버리는 인부들과의 숨바꼭질 끝에 사수한 과거의 흔적들로 직접 만들었기 때문이다. 2층 게스트하우스에 올라가면서 더 진한 근대를 만나게 된다. 옥색 페인트가 발린 낡은 철제 난간, 벽돌색 나무 창틀, 청테이프 자국이 남아있는 무늬유리, 돌가루로 만든 바닥까지 지금은 따라할 수조차 없는 진짜 근대시기가 여행자들을 기다리고 있다.
방이 많은 집, 방만 있는 집, 예나 지금이나 이 공간은 모조리 방뿐이다. 그래서 그 이름도 ‘방방’인 것이다. 전국 방방곡곡을 누비는 여행자들을 품어 줄 게스트하우스 ‘방방’으로 시간여행을 떠나보자.

‘슬리핑테이블’의 객실 내부

추억이 녹아있는 공간 [슬리핑테이블]

내가 나고 자란 집에 손님을 초대하는 마음으로. 하얀 이층집 ‘슬리핑 테이블’의 낮은 대문을 열고 들어서는 순간 오랜 친구의 예쁜 집에 초대받은 기분이 든다. 주인장은 이 공간에서 할아버지, 할머니와 어린 시절을 보냈다. 할아버지가 돌아가신 후 비워진 집이 점점 늙어가는 것을 안타까워하던 중 막연히 비워둘 수 없다는 결론 끝에 게스트하우스와 카페가 되었다.
공사가 시작되던 초봄, 마당 한켠 아담하던 배롱나무는 훌쩍 자라 은은한 다홍빛 꽃을 피웠고, 할머니께서 내 여름마다 정성스레 다듬으시던 나무들도 마무리될 즈음에는 자리를 잡아 푸른빛을 띄웠다.
따뜻한 방, 포근한 이불, 작은 소품들, 그리고 주인장의 어린 시절 사진이 놓여 있는 선반 등 슬리핑테이블의 곳곳에는 주인장의 취향이 녹아나있다. 책꽂이에 있는 책을 보면 주인장의 생각을 알 수 있고, 예쁜 패턴이 그려진 찻잔과 그릇들을 보면 주인장의 센스를 알 수 있다. 그리고 그 공간을 가득 채우고 있는 음악을 배경삼아 주인장이 즐겨먹던 홈메이드 음식과 수제 크래프트 비어를 함께 한다면 미처 생각지 못했던 것들이 주는 소소하고 따뜻한 감성들을 만날 수 있다. 거기에 날씨 좋은날 2층 테라스에서 바라보는 화성행궁의 모습은 이곳만이 줄 수 있는 특별한 선물이다.
주인장에게 ‘슬리핑테이블’은 집이다. 그리고 여행자들은 가족들이 초대하는 손님이다. 그래서 주인장에게 손님 한명 한명이 소중하다. 자신의 집에서 매일매일 새로운 손님들과 친구가 되고, 소소한 이야기도 나누며 함께 책도 읽고 영화도 보는 것이 주인장의 작은 소망이다.

Guesthouse, a Place Created from Life, Time, and Memory

Here are the newly renovated spaces that await travelers without forgetting the memories from the past. This is the story of the guesthouses that were built around Hwaseong Haenggung in 2016, which is the year of visiting Suwon Hwaseong. There must be a new guesthouse opening while I am writing this article. Among all the newly built places, which I regret not being able to visit, I will introduce the three guesthouses that I have chosen.

Gongjon Gonggan (Coexistence Space) 89 - 2, a Place Where People Take a Trip to Life

For everyone who experienced a life - changing trip….
The space next to the wide open gates shows a hospitality phrase written by the owner.
Gongjon Gonggan (Co - existence Space) 89 - 2 formerly belonged to the owner's grandparents. When they left for another city and leased the space, their love for the place had diminished, and the family ended up discussing the sale of the property. Who would have thought that the place that was on the verge of being destroyed would become a guesthouse that can accommodate many people?

Gongjon Gonggan 89 - 2 is rich in history. In addition to the owner's childhood memory spent with his grandparents, the time concerning various cultural and artistic events, including the Haenggung- dong Occupancy Art Festival, and Uhjjuhdah (Accidental) (Flea) Market, and the present Gongjon Gonggan with its café and guesthouse, is creating new history from many memories.
The pathway in front of the guesthouse is drenched with the warm light of the sun, while an aromatic coffee scent is coming out from the open door. The travelers, who visit the guesthouse, go back to their childhood memories as children playing at the alley entrance, while the elderly neighbors take a stroll around the block.
When you step into Gongjon Gonggan while following the smell of coffee, you will be welcomed by its mascot, Arr. On the first floor is the café with an assorted collection of tables and chairs. It appears that these props are placed to meet various travelers' different preferences. There are many ways to enjoy the café, such as pairing a cup of coffee with a homemade tiramisu, drinking beer with a slice of homemade pizza, and drinking wine with pasta and salad.
Now, let's go up to the second floor where the guesthouse is located. It is comprised of a living room, a 4 - person room, and a 2 - person room. Although the area is average in size, the travelers can read a book while taking in the magnificent view of Bukseo Poru of Suwon Hwaseong out the window or create new memories by getting acquainted with the other travelers.
The tourists can make new friends with the café's customers or enjoy various homemade seasonal dishes and unexpected events. A person can easily lose himself by living a life according to the standards of other people. However, traveling helps people in focusing on their lives and making them feel as if they are interacting with the world. Gongjon Gonggan is a place created for people who wanted to do some soul searching. This is Gongjon Gonggan (a place of co- existence) 89 - 2.

Bang Bang (Room Room), Travel toward the Modern Age

Bang Bang (Room Room) is a two - story house with four small windows. The building appears small, but once you walk into it, you will find yourself stepping into the modern era. The U - shaped space is a 50 - year - old legacy from the early modern times.

In 1965, more than 10 years after the Korean War, Bang Bang was born as a factory for wigs, which were Korea's only export product at the time. The factory lasted until the end of the 1970s, and its owners have been changed twice. In 1981, the third owner transformed the factory into an inn, and operated it until 2006. Bang Bang was born from it. The rooms, which line up the extensive hallway in the second floor, are reminiscent of the old inn. They were rented out as a place to stay in or a place for exhibition and work of artists.
In June 2015, the space that stood for half a century underwent new changes as a guesthouse and a café.
When you step into the café on the first floor, you will be greeted by beautiful auburn chairs and tables. The tables are filled with resplendent stories that will make you smile, as the owner created them with traces of the past obtained from the restoration site after playing tug of war with the workers during the building process. You will see more contemporary details in the guesthouse on the second floor, such as the old iron railing painted with jade green color, brick-colored wooden frame, embossed window glass with green tape trace, and the flooring made with crushed rocks.
This house is filled with many rooms just as it had in the past, thus it was given the name Bang Bang (Room Room). Why not travel through time at Guesthouse Bang Bang? We will accommodate travelers from around the world.

Sleeping Table Where the Memories are Collected

Inviting a guest to my home where I was born.
When I open the low gate of Sleeping Table, which is a white, two-story building, it feels like I am invited to a beautiful house of my longtime friend. The owner spent her childhood with her grandparents in this place. After her grandfather passed away, the owner could not bear to watch the place fall apart, so she decided to open a guesthouse and a café.
The zinnia tree, which used to be small at the time of restoration in early spring, has become fully grown, and it has produced scarlet flowers. Other trees that the owner's grandmother used to trim with affection every summer have settled in their own places and have been boasting greens.
Every nook and cranny of Sleeping Table, including the cozy rooms, warm beddings, little props, and a shelf decorated with the owner's childhood photos, is permeated with the owner's taste. You can read the owner's ideas from the books in the bookcase, and discover her personal preference from teacups to bowls adorned with elegant patterns. When you taste the owner's favorite homemade dishes and craft beer with the music filling the space to the brim, you will be filled with excitement and vitality that you never had during ordinary days.
Moreover, the view of Hwaseong Haenggung from the terrace on the second floor is a special present that only Sleeping Table can offer.
Sleeping Table is the owner's home, and the travelers are the invited guests. For this reason, each guest is important to the owner. Her wish is to become friends with them, and share stories with them, as well as read books and watch movies together every day at the comfort of her home
